Byte size: The size of the file is relative to the resolution and pixel size of the image (your overall quality).

Resolution: Is measured by dots per inch, or "dpi". The higher the dpi, the higher the quality of your image, and the more bytes it will have. This is the amount of dots that fit within a given area, usually (square) inches. This measurement only applies to bitmap images. If resolution is too low, there can be a jagged effect. Web, screen and Newspaper resolution is usually 72-96 DPI. Magazine resolution is usually 300 DPI. Covers/glossy brochures are anything upwards of 300 DPI. "Pixels per Inch" is the same as DPI.

Pixel: (picture elements) are units that collectively make up a scanned graphic image. Every pixel is a small square that holds color. Many pixels make up a picture. A 300 dpi image contains 300 pixels per inch and 90,000 pixels per square inch of space.

The following file extensions are commonly used in web design because of their quality and small byte sizes. (The smaller the byte-size the faster loading the images will be).

BMP : (Bitmap format) Bit (as in binary 0 or 1) map is a graphic image stored as a specific arrangement of dots (or pixels). This is the format for photographic-type images. TIFF and JPEG are common bitmap formats.

GIF : (Graphics Interchange Format) This format uses a fixed color palette that has 256 colors available. Its dpi (Dots per Inch or Resolution) is very low, usually 72-96 dpi. The GIF format uses compression for smaller files and faster downloads, which makes them great for quality web design. This format is best for images with solid colors or areas of uniform color such as illustrations and logos. This format supports animation as well as transparency.

JPEG : (Joint Photographic Experts Group) is used for photographic (continuous tone) images. Unlike GIF files the JPEG format can take advantage of the full spectrum of colors available to your monitor (millions of colors). The JPEG format also uses compression for smaller files and faster downloads, which also makes it a great format for web design.

TIFF : (Tagged-Image File Format) This format is used for bitmaps only. The TIFF format is supported by virtually all graphics applications, which makes it an extremely common format. However, these files are very large (meaning they contain many bytes) and would be very slow in a web browser format. These files are mostly used for printing purposes.

CGI Bin/CGI: The common gateway interface (CGI) is a standard way for a Web server to pass a Web user's request to an application program, and to receive data back, so it can be forwarded to the user. The CGI is essential when receiving information from a web pages "form".

Domain Registration: The ability to secure a unique domain name on the World Wide Web (like www.vtwebdesigners.com). There are a variety of different registration companies to choose from. Ownership of a specific domain name varies in duration given the plan, and the registration company you choose. An example of a registration company is: www.register.com

E-Commerce: E-commerce (electronic commerce or EC) is the buying and selling of goods and services on the Internet, especially the World Wide Web. Having an effective website with multiple payment methods, and punctual customer service is essential in competing in E-Commerce.

Email Accounts: The users mailbox on the World Wide Web. A web presentation can have multiple email accounts. This is an easy method to receive information and feedback from a wide audience. The user can access their account upon request using a wide range of mediums.

Encryption: is the conversion of data into a form, called a ciphertext, that cannot be easily understood by unauthorized people. Encryption is important when using e-commerce, for all transactions should remain confidential at all times.

FLASH: a popular authoring software developed by Macromedia, is used to create vector graphics-based animation programs with full-screen navigation interfaces, graphic illustrations, and simple interactivity in an initialized, resizable file format that is small enough to stream across a normal modem connection.

Forms: are made up of text boxes, and buttons that allow the user to input and select given data to be shared with another party. Forms are very useful for obtaining specific information in a desired format. They are user friendly and offer high speed information sharing.

FTP: File Transfer Protocol (FTP), a standard Internet protocol, is the simplest way to exchange files between computers on the Internet. FTP is commonly used to transfer Web page files from their creator to the computer that acts as their server for everyone on the Internet. It's also commonly used to download programs and other files to your computer from other servers.

Graphics Design: An art that is used to create and manipulate images on a wide scale. The ability to bring an image to life, create on-line artwork, and enhance image quality. Graphic design can be performed using a number of different applications.

Java Script: Java is a programming language. It was designed to have the "look and feel" of the C++ language, but it is simpler to use than C++ and enforces an object-oriented programming model. It can also be used to build a small application module or applet for use as part of a Web page. Applets make it possible for a Web page user to interact with the page.

Links: are usually set as a portion of text or "clickable images" that tell the browser to transfer the user from one location on the Internet, to another. A link is what you used to open this definition dialogue box. When a link has been activated (usually by clicking on the highlighted text or region) a behavior will be initiated, either to take the user to the specified URL or enact the behavior.

Maintenance/ Updates: are alterations, add-ons, and "cleaning" associated with maintaining a functional, accurate web presentation. Maintenance can include: the repairing of broken links (links that are inactive or related to inactive sites, or behaviors that are subject change with time), removal of old files that take up space, modifying the website programming language (HTML) to stay competitive with the evolving technologies, image pixel modifications to maintain speed with new browsers. Updates can include: adding or changing information on existing pages, adding new pages, graphics, forms, behaviors, unique attributes to increase exposure to new search engines, and much much more!

My SQL: SQL (Structured Query Language) is a standard interactive and programming language for getting information from and updating a database. Queries take the form of a command language that lets you select, insert, update, find out the location of data, and so forth.

Navigation Bars: are the designated areas on a web page that are set aside to organize the grouping of links. Navigation Bars make it easy for the user to smoothly travel through a web presentation and beyond.

Perl: (Practical Extraction and Reporting Language) is a script programming language that is similar in syntax to the C language. It is used much in web design for dealing with the actions associated with forms. After the submit button is pressed there is a good chance that Perl is doing the work (processing the given data, and deployment of instructions to result in a specific action, like a confirmation note etc.)

Pop3: A point-of-presence (POP) is an access point to the Internet. A POP usually includes routers, digital/analog call aggregators, servers, and frequently frame relays or ATM switches. They are useful in gaining access to your email account from an alternative PC.

Server Space: every web page is a file written in a programming language. These files are saved on a computer (server) that runs 24-7. The space is usually divided into a portion of mega byte units. There are many Internet companies and plans that one can choose from. They all offer server space and a variety of different services.

Shopping Carts: are used with e-commerce. They allow the user to gather products or services from a current website. When the session is completed, the user can "check out," and purchase the product of service that they selected earlier in the commerce session. Shopping carts are great to have to encourage the purchase of multiple things.

Text Alternative: An input of text in the place of an image or link. The alternative text will show before an image is fully loaded in the situation of opening in a non-image supporting browser.

Web Hosting: everything on the web is sitting on a server. Internet service providers offer space to "house" your website. Plans (prices, duration's, space, etc.) vary depending on the company you choose.

Web Search Engine Directories: search engines crawl the web looking for keywords. They act as the Internets evolving list of databases that are used to find sites that pertain to information specified by the user. Alta visa, Google, Hot Bot, and C4 are just a few of the many search engines that exist on the WWW.
